Day 9: The Son Who Opens Blind Eyes — John 9:25
Reflection: John 9 records one of the most dramatic miracles in the Gospel: Jesus healing a man who had been blind from birth. The miracle is extraordinary not only because of the healing itself but because of what it reveals about Jesus.
The disciples initially ask whose sin caused the blindness, his own or his parents’. Jesus rejects this assumption and explains that the man’s condition will become an opportunity for God’s works to be revealed.
Jesus then makes mud with His saliva, places it on the man’s eyes, and instructs him to wash in the Pool of Siloam. When the man obeys, he receives his sight.
This miracle demonstrates the creative power of Christ. Just as God formed humanity from the dust in creation, Jesus gives sight to eyes that had never seen.
However, the story quickly becomes a spiritual drama. The religious leaders refuse to accept the miracle because it occurred on the Sabbath. Instead of celebrating the healing, they interrogate the man repeatedly.
Throughout the questioning, the formerly blind man grows in his understanding of Jesus. At first he simply calls Him “the man called Jesus.” Later he describes Him as a prophet. Finally, when Jesus reveals Himself as the Son of Man, the man responds with faith and worship.
Meanwhile, the religious leaders remain spiritually blind despite their religious knowledge.
The chapter ends with Jesus explaining that He came so that those who do not see may see, and those who think they see may become blind.
This story illustrates a profound spiritual truth. Physical sight is valuable, but spiritual sight is even more important. Only Jesus, the Messiah and Son of God, can open the eyes of the heart.
John records this miracle so readers may recognize who Jesus is and believe in Him. When we come to Christ in faith, He removes our spiritual blindness and allows us to see the truth of God.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for opening my eyes to the truth of the Gospel. Help me see You more clearly and follow You faithfully.
Action Point: Reflect on how Christ has opened your spiritual eyes and thank Him for revealing the truth to you.
