Day 6: The Bread of Life — John 6:35

Reflection: John 6 begins with one of the most well-known miracles in the Gospels: the feeding of the five thousand. With only five loaves and two fish, Jesus feeds a massive crowd, demonstrating His power over creation. The people are amazed and want to make Him king by force. However, their interest in Jesus is largely driven by physical needs. They see Him primarily as someone who can provide food and solve earthly problems. Jesus responds by redirecting their attention to a deeper reality. The miracle was not meant merely to satisfy hunger for a day but to reveal something about His identity. He tells them: “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life.” The crowd refers to the manna that God provided in the wilderness during the days of Moses. In response, Jesus makes a profound declaration: He Himself is the true bread from heaven. Then comes one of the famous “I Am” statements in the Gospel of John: “I am the bread of life.” Just as physical bread sustains the body, Jesus sustains the soul. He is the source of eternal life. Those who come to Him and believe in Him will never experience spiritual hunger or thirst again. This teaching reveals an important truth about belief. Many people are willing to follow Jesus as long as He meets their immediate needs. But true belief involves trusting Him as the Messiah and Son of God who alone provides eternal life. As Jesus continues explaining this truth, many people begin to turn away because His teaching challenges their expectations. The crowd wanted a miracle worker, but Jesus calls them to faith in Him. At this moment Peter makes a powerful confession: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” This statement perfectly aligns with the purpose of John’s Gospel. Belief in Jesus is not based on convenience or temporary benefit; it is based on recognizing that He alone is the Son of God who gives life. Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the bread of life. Nourish my soul through Your word and help me depend on You every day for spiritual strength and life. Action Point: Spend intentional time today reading Scripture and allowing Christ to feed your soul.
